Purchasing An AWS Reserved Instance

This page describes how to purchase a Reserved Instance (or server) on Amazon Web Services (AWS).

Purchasing a Reserved Instance allows you to run Sendy at a lower rate over one or three years versus paying through On-Demand pricing.

If you run Sendy on AWS following the expiry of your AWS 12-month FREE tier, you may wish to purchase a Reserved Instance to save on costs. There is no need to purchase a Reserved Instance during your AWS 12-month FREE tier.

The AWS  EC2 pricing page explains the cost of different Reserved Instances in more detail.

IMPORTANT!

You should think carefully before purchasing an AWS Reserved Instance. All purchases are NON-REFUNDABLE. The AWS Reserved Instance documentation provides further information.

The instructions below select a standard 36-month Reserved Instance with the entire payment made upfront. You may wish to chose a different option. The AWS Reserved Instance pricing page has more details.

Here are the steps to follow

1) Log in to the AWS console at https://aws.amazon.com/

Make sure Your AWS Region is set correctly:

Select EC2 from the Services menu:

2) Select Reserved Instances from the left-hand menu:

3) Click Purchase Reserved Instances:

4) The Purchase Reserved Instances page should appear:

The Platform menu should be left as Linux/UNIX and the Instance Type should be left as t2.micro.

Within the Term menu, select 12 months - 36 months:

5) Within the Payment Option menu, select All Upfront:

6) Click Search:

7) Look for the standard instance priced at $145:

On the appropriate line, click Add to Cart.

The Shopping Cart page should appear:

IMPORTANT!

Clicking Purchase below purchases you a NON-REFUNDABLE Reserved Instance. There is no "are you sure?" follow-up!)

8) Click Purchase:

A Purchase Reserved Instances Succeeded message should appear:

Click Close.

9) You should return to the Reserved Instances page and your new Reserved Instance will now be listed:

The details confirm when your Reserved Instance will expire.

10) Within AWS Billing (see Get Started With AWS for more details), the Reserved Instance will be applied and the running cost of your EC2 t2.micro server for Sendy should now be zero:

(Note: AWS Billing will still show any server charges incurred before the Reserved Instance was purchased)

11) All done!

Sendy Is Fast, Reliable And Cheap!

We found that as our subscribers grew, we were creeping up to over $100 a month for a traditional cloud-based email marketing platform. We decided to explore alternatives and ended up landing on a great self-hosted email marketing solution called Sendy.

Overall, we've found Sendy to not only be an excellent alternative to MailChimp, but to blow it away as far as speed, usability and functionality are concerned.

Sendy is fast, reliable and cheap.
